Review: Giving Church Another Chance by Todd Hunter

In his latest book Giving Church Another Chance, Anglican Bishop Todd D. Hunter looks at the deep spiritual existence found in the life and practice of the church. Having been influenced by the likes of Richard Foster, Dallas Willard and Robert Webber, Hunter offers an honest, personal look at his own walk and struggles as he has learned to personally repractice the life of the church.
Bishop Hunter brings a lot to the current church conversation. Hunter's experience in many expressions of Christianity provides us with insight into the living, breathing ways to practice the life of the church between Sunday afternoon and Saturday night. Essentially, he says what many have been arguing in favor of for some time, he simply manages to articulate it in healthy, refreshing, researched and polished ways.
Lest I sell the book short, I should mention that I most strongly appreciated his chapters on Doxology, Sermons and Benediction. As someone who moved from an evangelical tradition into a "Big-L" liturgical one, it is easy for me to point to the Eucharist as the key element for a discussion of spiritual practices (and Hunter lays out the Eucharist discussion in an accessible way as well). The chapters previously mentioned were insightful and reflected the need to repractice them in a way I had not expected.
I recommend this short read to many around the church. Church-goers, ex-church-goers, and the sometimes church-goers will benefit from reading this book. We're going to utilize it as a book discussion group at church after Sunday morning worship this summer.
